APOLLO BEACH: Two Killed, Four Injured in Power Plant Explosion at Big Bend Power Plant

“Investigation Ongoing”

APOLLO BEACH, FLORIDA (June 29, 2017) – An explosion at the Big Bend power plant killed two people and injured four on Thursday, according to a local news source. (map)

The explosion happened just before 4:30 pm on Thursday. A slag tank reportedly exploded around that time during routine maintenance. Slag is a byproduct of creating power from coal. Bits of coal fall into a water tank where the pieces of coal crystallize and cool off.

Two people were reportedly killed in the explosion, and four more were injured. Two of those injured were airlifted to Tampa General, and two were taken by ambulance to the same hospital. This is not the first fatal accident at the plant, in 2014 a contractor died after slipping and falling off a catwalk. Thursday’s accident remains under investigation at this time by OSHA.

“Sadly, there are no words that can comfort all family members and friends affected by this tragic accident,” said the attorneys from West Alliance Injury Lawyers. “Our thoughts and prayers are with all those involved.”
