The accident happened in the early morning hours of Tuesday, September 5th, around 12:45 am in the 1200 block of Kendall Drive. A 24 year old man accused of being under the influence was speeding down Kendall Drive in a Volkswagen Jetta heading southbound, when he abruptly slammed into a southbound Ford Escape. The impact sent the Jetta spinning into oncoming traffic where it struck a third vehicle.
The driver of the Ford Escape, identified as 54 year old Daryl Lopez, a resident of Aliso Viejo, was rushed to St. Bernadine Medical Center where he tragically died. A female passenger inside the Escape was also hospitalized, and two people from the third vehicle were injured.
The 24 year old driver of the Jetta was injured and hospitalized, but was later arrested and booked into West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga on suspicion of driving under the influence and gross vehicular manslaughter. He has been identified as Gerardo Hernandez from San Bernardino.
