“Semi vs. Vehicle Fatality”
SAN MATEO, CALIFORNIA (June 22, 2017) – 83-year-old Dennis Vernak and 79-year-old Helena Vernak was involved in a a fatal collision on Highway 1 at Pomponio State Beach Thursday afternoon, according to California Highway Patrol. (map)
The deadly crash occurred at approximately 4:11 p.m. The driver of a minivan, later identified as 83-year-old Dennis Varnak, was leaving the parking area of Pomponio State Beach when a Peterbuilt Dump truck, driven by 36-year-old San Gregorio, struck the minivan on the driver’s side section of the minivan, according to CHP Officer Art Montiel.
Helena Vernak, who was a passenger in the minivan, died at the scene. Dennis Vernak was airlifted to Stanford Medical Center where he later succumbed to his injuries. The initial report stated that Dennis Vernak did not make sure the road was clear to go before pulling onto the highway.
Gregorio was not injured in the collision. Officer Montiel stated that drug and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the collision. An investigation is still ongoing.
