INDIO, CALIFORNIA (June 28, 2017) – An Arizona youth cheerleading group was involved in an injury collision on the eastbound Interstate 10 Freeway Wednesday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol. (map)

The accident occurred a approximately 4:15 p.m. A charter bus, carrying approximately 30 people, prepared to stop for the slower traffic as it was traveling eastbound in the No. 1 lane of I-10 Freeway. The driver of a big-rig, later identified as Rene Aragon, was traveling in the No. 2 lane of the eastbound I-10 Freeway. The speed o the big-rig was to fast to stop. Aragon attempted to avoid a collision by turning left and struck the rear of the charter bus, according to the CHP report.

The impact caused the big-rig to travel across the center divider and into the westbound lanes of the I-10 Freeway and caught ablaze. Aragon was able to free himself from the big-rig.

The driver of the charter bus, identified as Manuel Valdivia, suffered minor injuries and was transported along with three cheerleaders to Desert Regional Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.

The charter bus was transporting the cheerleading group back to Arizona as they completed a cheerleading camp at the University of California Los Angeles. CHP officials state that drugs and alcohol were not factors in the collision. An investigation is ongoing .
