The incident happened at approximately 1:45 p.m. According to witnesses, Salazar was walking northbound in a marked crosswalk when the driver of a black Nissan SUV, identified as 28-year-old Erick Reyes-Melo traveling northbound on Meridian Avenue, made a left turn onto westbound Main street and struck Salazar, according to Alhambra police Sgt. Steven Carr.
Salazar was transported to Huntington Memorial Hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Officers were able to locate the SUV at Reyes-Melo’s home. Reyes-Melo was later arrested and initially booked on felony hit-and-run and later suspected vehicular manslaughter.
Alcohol or drugs do not appear to be factors in the collision, according to Sgt. Carr.
