MADRAS, OREGON (August 19, 2017) – 58-year-old Mark James Rich died in a plane crash in Willow Creek Canyon near the Madras Airport Saturday afternoon, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department. (map)
The accident occurred at approximately 2:00 p.m. when a 2002 fixed-wing, single-engine plane crashed near the top of Willow Creek Canyon. approximately 1 mile south of Madras Airport. The plane was covered in flames.
Initial reports indicated a second person was on board the plane due to a reservation for two to stay in a local area. Investigators confirmed, through a family member who had originally planned to make the trip, that Rich was the sole occupant in the plane at the time of the collision, according to Jefferson County Sheriff Jim Adkins.
No other details of the collision were available. An investigation is ongoing.
