Nell Castle Dies after Train Hits Car on County Road 1800 near Route 16

“Tragic Accident”

PANA, ILLINOIS (June 14, 2017) – Nell Castle was sadly identified as one of the five senior citizens killed on Wednesday evening on 1800 Christian County Road, according to a local news source. (map)

The tragic accident happened just before 7:00 pm on County Road 1800, near Route 16 in Pana. A van carrying five senior citizens returning from an ice cream social, was struck by a freight train as it attempted to cross the tracks. The crossing was not equipped with lights or gate arms at the time of the accident.

All five senior citizens on board were sadly killed in the accident. Three were pronounced dead at the scene, and two died later that evening at nearby hospitals. They have been identified as 77 year old Nell Castle, 79 year old Herbert Castle, 89 year old John Castle, 87 year old Mary Pugsley, and 89 year old Mary Castle. The accident remains under investigation at this time as authorities attempt to determine cause and liability.
