The accident happened around 8:30 am on Squaw Valley Road at the Squaw Valley Resort. 42 year old Joe Zuiches was working with an avalanche control and maintenance crew to work on making the grounds as safe as possible before opening to the public. While working, an explosive charge used to intentionally set off an avalanche detonated for an unknown reason.
Joe Zuiches was tragically killed in the blast, and was pronounced dead at the scene by responding emergency services. The investigation is ongoing at this time to determine cause and liability. Zuiches left behind a wife and an infant son, and a GoFundMe has been set up to help with expenses.
